If you have to go then go. I mean he's a friend and I assume you're being invited. I probably would only go if he was family and I was obligated. Although I have dipped out of family functions before. It really won't matter much at the end of the day. At this point in my life I only expect to go to funerals and I might find ways to not go to those.
