I don't think its a controversial statement that if you want some media product to appeal to women, then the main character should probably be female. It's no different for men. In fact, I would say that this goes for basically every demographic.
And with the original God of War games, it was undeniable that the target demographic was young men.
I do think there's been a bit of a compromise that goes "Well, the main character may be a girl, but she's a SEXY girl!" to indicate that men are still the target demographic.
I think people have become more keen to when they are being advertised to and when this is no longer the case. And when the advertising starts being passive-aggressive towards its main audience, that's always a bad sign. One way that this sort of passive-aggressiveness might manifest is in your once-firmly male-centered franchise having its main character replaced by a plain-faced middle aged woman in modest clothing, even in defiance of her lore (she's supposed to be a literal ageless goddess), and the story is this quirky shit about her meeting a talking jello and ribbons.
I don't deny that there's probably right-wing grifting in this as well, but I do think there's some legitimacy in people thinking that they're being given the middle finger as an audience when shit like this happens.
