What is the mindset of the ultra rich?
What do they need all that money for? For what purpose? They have more money than they can will ever be able to use in their lifetime on whatever luxuries they want. Yet they'll really only ever spend that money trying to make even more money so they can spend that trying to make even more money too.
What is all this for?

For the ultra rich they're so disconnected from the actual means of production that's it's literally just a line or number go up, they are sheltered from the blood, sweat and tears of the proletariat, the daily struggle and their life circumstances, they may see how things are done but it's entirely different to be in the shoes of those who do it for 8hrs+ a day in and out for life and to be one paycheck away from homelessness.

It's a surrogate activity. Just like some people chase high scores in video games or try to collect weird objects or learn every dinosaur.

It's about competition. Sure you might be in the top 10 richest guys but don't you want to be number 1? And yeah it's also just an autistic obsession with chasing big numbers.

I have to admit that I am sort of starting to understand the impulse a bit, now that I'm earning and saving money, I feel the need to chase a higher number, of course my situation is totally different since I don't already have billions but I can understand the impulse to grow number bigger, it feels good, it feels secure.

Hmmm, maybe the Commies are finally evolving.

  1. Status. You need more money otherwise someone else will get more money than you and outrank you. This is basically a human universal. Those who don't chase money still chase it somehow
  2. Legacy.
  3. Actually wanting to do stuff. There is something, for example, to the idea that Bezos is really into building the amazing logistical machine that is Amazon in ways that aren't entirely about the fact it also makes him rich.
  4. Power, which is not in fact entirely about money. (E.g. Bezos could - even if he doesn't usually - kneecap the hopes of many random products simply by banning them from Amazon and promoting their competitors)
