The brackets are just explaining the opposite case. E.g. if I give (take) money to (from) you, you get richer (poorer)
You either read the bracket in preference to the previous word, or ignore it. ("If I give money to you, you get richer" / "if I take money from you, you get poorer")

tbh the worst part about economics is it really doesn't emphasize that we live in a bad world full of trade offs. The result is that "sweatshops are the least bad option on the table from a menu of fucking awful options" becomes "sweatshops are good"
