how history buffs will genuinely look at you if you try to talk about umayad tax policy instead of which ww2 tank has the most aura

Dios mio…

They all kinda hyperfixate on the 20th century and call themselves history "experts" yet they can't recall WHO led Georgia through its golden age.
It's Tamar the Great btw

while obviously older history can be very interesting and valuable, I do think it's most important to learn about modern history.

that said, obviously all discussion of ww2 tactics/weapons/vehicles/etc by non experts is just for entertainment

"which ww2 tank has the most aura" isn't even an argument, it's objectively the t-34

I mean it was definitely the best overall but I feel like there are others that are just more fun or more interesting in general, or more capable as single tanks rather than as overall weapons of war

This should be at actual Spirit Halloweens this year.

It doesn't help that pop-history books outside of warslop aren't engaging. It's hard to effectively convey the stakes of economic policy, people getting blown to smithereens is much more visceral.

I’ve always had more interest in geological history

This is why we should have historical realistic fiction novels.

It was obviously the Tsar Tank

Many people look down other aspects of history, because pop-culture still heavily promotes not only great man theory, but also a kind of social darwinism, wherein war is the ultimate form of inter-cultural conflict. Someone willing to engage with economic policy on its own terms will likely find Wages of Destruction just as engaging.

  1. Period dramas in general are already being written by the truckload.
  2. Even well-researched novels are far more susceptible to reactionary falsification.
  3. Most of them are written about some war anyway, as a cheap means of creating conflict.

This. I believe this is the reason for glorifying the past as some virtuous macho man paradise where men were demigods before microplastics.

Never mind the fact that most people back then we're lowly workers with only self preservation on the mind.

>most people back then we're lowly workers with only self preservation on the mind
I take issue with this sentiment. That we spend most of our time on the maintenance of ourselves or other people, has been a given for all of human history up to now. The only thing "lowly" about work considered such, is that the current division of labor will lock someone into it. I fully support job rotation as a way to eliminate undesirable careers and break up labor elites.

the egg and chicken scenario. people say we need more of X novels. but if people arent interested in it then it wont sell. or get views.
