What even is the point of arguing online? Vast majority of people won't change their mind no matter what and they'll still defend their ideas like religious people defend theirs.

Yes, debate addiction is pointless for the end user, but it keeps people addicted to sites that can facilitate pointless debates. That's why people that use twitter get bored of fedi and personal websites, either choosing to stay on twitter or move to bluesky to serve as a diet twitter.

The sooner you can learn to engage with discourse through essays and cooperative communication, the less control algorithm sites will have control over you.

I guess the point is to perform it for the audience reading the argument instead of changing the mind of the opposition.

This, plus, just because someone doesn't concede your point to you doesn't mean you haven't affected them. Even in person it's rare for someone to just admit they were wrong and change their viewpoint to you. That happens in private, quietly, and then people pretend they never held the view they now see as shitty.
That being said, I don't really invest a lot in online arguments any more. If I'm posting, it's probably shitposting, a chance for me to talk to people in ways that would cause me social or career issues IRL to people who could use a good mocking.

I am open to leftoid and rightoid arguments both

Arguing online is a self-improvement exercise at best…
It's your points that you expand, it's your mentality you develop, it's the obstacles you're faced with.
