Martin Luther was historically progressive. Without the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic church would have successfully kept all of Europe mired in ignorance for another 6000 years. Daily reminder that without the Protestants seizing control of printing presses and mass printing the actual Bible, the Catholic church would have continued to get away with claiming that everything they did was "justified by God" because of their information monopoly. As soon as the Protestants broke through the censorship, everyone realized the Catholics were lying and the Vatican's authority was forever shattered.
