Tbh, I like Sonic 1 + Sonic Adventure 1.

Sonic 3 is the best, still to this day. That being said, I don't quite like the Sonic and Knuckles expansion, except for the addition of Hyper Sonic and the final boss battle. For the 3D games, SA2 is still the best, although I haven't played any of the newer titles so I'm biased.

I was more of a nintendo guy when sonic was relevant in the 90's.

Sonic Mania, i think.

I like some fan games too, like Sonic GT, I would play a whole game of this. I really feel like this is Sonic in 3D done right. You have freedom of control, so you don't feel like you're just going through the motions between set pieces that play themselves, like in the earlier 3D games, and the ability to hit the natural geometry of the level and launch yourself into the stratosphere, like in the Sonic CD opening animation, would make for a satisfying sense of speed and would open up a variety of ways to traverse any given environment. All this really needs is some refinement and much more content.

i'd probably rank sonic adventure higher than mario 64 in terms of adapting a 2d franchise to 3d, sega was a lot more innovative as a company than nintendo was (and they won the console wars, even if they couldnt compete with sony and microsoft at the end)

Sega FAILED to have a proper 3D Sonic platformer on the Saturn and then they made one a generation later. How the fuck is that innovative?

>they won the console wars

Talk about sales is the shittiest way you can talk about video games (or music or movies or comics). But you asked for this, so: Famicom/NES sold more than Master System. SNES sold more than Mega Drive. N64 sold more than Saturn. Gamecube sold more than Dreamcast. You don't want to look at Game Boy vs Game Gear, absolute massacre.

Yuji Naka is such a bad game designer he was rightly sent to prison.

Sonic = the poor man's Bubsy.

i wasnt talking about sales, i was talking about competition. sega wasnt even competing with nintendo by the early 2000s, they were putting up fight with sony and microsoft (and only lost because those 2 literally had infinite money and were selling their consoles at a loss)
sure, nintendos strategy of creating less advanced hardware and focusing on a specific target audience worked out better in the long term, but sega was far more ambitious
