My point from the start was that they were better than Europe. Everywhere was feudal except some of the North American indigenous tribes. Ethiopia was an aristocracy with little wealth mobility. Europe at the exact same time was a much worse “shithole” where there were constant pogroms and religious massacres. You were as likely to be burnt at the stake in Europe as you were to experience upward wealth mobility in Zagwe-era Ethiopia.

Their country is basically one big mountain range and they were isolated for most of their recent history due to being a Christian nation surrounded by Muslim neighbors and cut off from the rest of Christendom. Becoming some super wealthy nation wasn't in the cards. It's not even remotely debatable that they're considerably better off now than they would have been if they had gotten colonized.

they literally only fought against muslims in one war as far as i know because most early islamic nations saw ethiopia in a good light because muh prophet's apostles fled there and befriended the king of abyssinia

and it was like a proxy war in the 1500s between the ottomans and the portuguese supporting ethiopia and some somali sultanate against each other, with manpower.

they were isolated but not in an active hostile war with all their northern neighbors, surely they had the centuries to prosper and overcome their geographic struggles
