>that weird tankie meme that North Korea was more industrialized and had better living standards than the South until the 80s or so
While they technically had more industry it was a typical Stalinist economy based on energy and strategic/national defense production, there was next-to nothing for the consumer and living standards were always pitiably bad compared to South Korea which had abundances of American and Japanese goods in its stores and which never had rationed food or anything.

Have you considered that living standards are bad and liberal coded and we should prioritize building shitty SCUD and rocket artillery knock offs?

Living standards are a bourgeois cosmopolitan meme. They got the military force and geopolitical allies to back it up. If you firewall the whole country then the populace wouldn't give a shit about living standards, if they haven't even attempted to topple the regime from the inside then it's clearly not bad as it's made out to be.

this is bad cope while you can just underscore "until the 1980s" like 10 times and then point out that even in the IMF crisis south korea didn't implode while north korea's situation was basically post-apocalyptic during the same period. as with maoist china, you can point to south korea's slower early development as being, in part, building the bedrock for future growth.

he was a bastard but unironically an underrated main-character of world history.
  • worked with communists at one point
  • worked with the japanese empire at one point
  • after taking power in a coup, had all the major business leaders imprisoned until they signed their businesses over to him. Once they did, he immediately returned them and was like "lol idk how to run a business, I just wanted you to understand that I run the show here, when i say export you fucking export, got it?"
held elections, pro-democracy candidate outflanked him to the right by being an insane mccarthyite who highlighted his commie connections. (this backfired on them because left-wing voters who should've wanted the soft-touch of democracy voted for Park lmao)
  • North tried to assassinate him personally using commandos
  • did a joint-declaration on Korean unification with the North without consulting the Americans first
  • all time developmentalist regime run, much more impressive than Japan (massive US handouts, already developed civil service), Taiwan (also got more US support) or Singapore (ideal geography and competent civil service)
  • murdered by his CIA chief at random during a meeting for reasons that remain inexplicable to this day.
  • daughter was acting first lady of Korea 1974-9 and subsequently became president of South Korea in 2008 and, like most South Korean presidents, left office in inauspicious circumstances after being impeached and jailed for being manipulated by a cult leader that got close to her after her father's death
  • guy who prosecuted her for this is the incel who blundered a coup attempt a few years ago btw

dumb post
as a general rule people revolt when their circumstances improve and then stall a little, not when their circumstances are bad and get worse. South Korea is a good comparison case, where student revolts happened in the 1980s because people were rich enough and comfortable enough that the restrictions of dictatorship started to chafe. you therefore cannot read anything off about how content north koreans are from the lack of revolts.

Well good thing Kim Jong Un is fixing that with the 20x10 Regional Development Policy

>South Korea which had abundances of American and Japanese goods
Read the second part of this, carefully. Also wikipedia? really?
>living standards were always pitiably bad compared to South Korea
Not as bad people or portray, not to mention that South Korea was largely full of slums and poor infrastructure until the 80s-90s including famous slums on the outskirts of Seoul. In North Korea living standards improved faster and more reliably than in South Korea because of the planned economy. South Korea's growth spurt started after it Nationalized and planned its economy in a similar vein to the USSR, which let it pull ahead along with American support).

Furthermore South Korea had funding from the USA and wasn't destroyed by concentrated USAF bombing, chemical and Biological warfare during the Korean War, wherein almost no buildings were left standing and millions of people left dead or injured while the mountainous Northern territories had little arable land for crops.
