>1997 odyssey
>calypso is black

woke is out of control shaking my damn head

The internet just made everyone crazy.

>>808323
The difference between the 97 miniseries and the current film is that Calypso being dark-skinned was plausible because Ogygia (her home) was linked to the parts of the Mediterranean near Africa. The issue is also making a big deal out of their skin-color in PR and the film, whereas in 1997 it was just her look, that did not get pointed out specifically.

>thinking about what is plausible in a literal myth with goddesses, gods, sea monsters, shapeshifters etc.
lol
>we have to justify a black person's presence on screen with "plausibility" even though implausibly pasty anglo and germanic theater kids are always playing ancient mediterranean and middle eastern heroes on screen without anyone batting an eye.

Chuddies utterly BTFOd by Nolan

yyaaaaaayyyy

>>808990
>ai slop meme
ugh
>defending pedowood from chudviewers
i choose neither

regarding the odyssey it's just a bronze age tale about how slave owning rich moids should be allowed to run off and commit war crimes for 20 years, cheat on their wife with goddesses, then come home without any of the loot and kill everyone their wife was trying to remarry because I guess 20 years is not enough time for a woman to be allowed to move on from her presumed dead husband

also btw the woman is a whore if she is disloyal to her absent war criminal slave owner but he can contract as many goddess STDs as he wants

>Femcel finds out that 3000 year old story has problematic content and doesn't pass the Bechdel Test™

>>808999
i'm hardly a feminist but I do think we should maybe question the value of these depraved slaver aristo fantasies

>>809009
Another converted right winger that really really want to say degeneracy I see

>>809019
>nooo you're right wing if you don't respect 'le classics' written by people who went out and made a game out of hunting down and raping and torturing slaves for fun

>>809023
Yep. And yet these same people wanna cry about “woke” being thrown around as an indignatory remark

>>808990
I’m starting to think you guys live entirely in your heads. You obsess over “slop” and how it “pisses of chuds” while also complaining about it being “too liberal”

>>809009
There’s nothing to question. It’s all just slop. You just simply don’t indulge in it

>>809026
People just are desperate for "a win" so they'll willingly identify with some billionaire midwit retard that race baited them yet again

>>809023
>death of the author ? More like I will intrisically link the author to every thing they write

>>809035
Why not? Like look if the story was some completely un ideological project then ok maybe, but like anon said it's about a guy coming back after decades and killing all his wife's suitors, he is the asshole in this story

>>808999
idk why another anon started answering for me but I'm neither an incel nor a woman (that's what femcel means, right? woman incel?) I'm a married hetmoid man. I'm marreid to a cis woman. I have the most vanilla life possible. I even got married to my high school girlfriend. Very boring stuff. Nothing exciting. Even when I read the odyssey… oh … 20 years ago, in middle school… I thought it was pretty funny how this guy is considered a hero in the western canon. No I don't expect bronze age people to have the same values as us modern people. But it's pretty weird how we keep a lot of the same values as them even after 1000s of years… When we watched the 1997 movie in class everyone cheered when odysseus killed the suitors … I remember thinking "Did we watch the same shit?" he tells his wife at the beginning "remarry if our son has a beard" but then he gets mad and goes on a murder spree when a bunch of hound dogs are trying to bang his female property. pretty funny stuff. there's a lot of drama around whether she keeps her "purity" but none over whether he keeps his since he fucks goddesses and does war crimes in troy.

>>808998
it's an AI generated meme. peak slop

How do you know that?

Looks like liberals are starting to turn on this movie. This woman made a new translation of The Odyssey that was deemed as woke garbage by chuds and even her seems to hate Nolan…

>liberals are starting to turn on this movie.
She is multiple people?

>The New York Times Magazine praised the translation's "radically contemporary voice".[1][6] Charlotte Higgins described Wilson's work as a "cultural landmark" that "exposes centuries of masculinist translations".[15] Poet and translator Josephine Balmer agreed in New Statesman that previous translations had been "firmly male".[13] NPR's Annalisa Quinn describes the translation as progressivist, excising "centuries of verbal ideological buildup", citing previous translators' additions of Christianisation, sexism, and Victorian euphemisms.[16] In a review for London Review of Books, Colin Burrow described Wilson as a "moderniser", particularly highlighting her translations of epithets into phrases that provide "running commentary on emotional and social relationships". Additionally, he stated the immense challenges posed by retaining the same number of lines as the original.[17] But other critics have emphasized the traditional qualities of Wilson's poetic form: "there is absolutely no more traditional music in the history of English literature." [18]

I never read her translation but it does sound kinda crazy. "Masculinist translations" lol, lmao even.

>>808349
Shut your bitchass up, it’s really just the pervasiveness of reactionary attitudes that have led to today’s different in interpretation, meanwhile “woke” messages in media were ubiquitous 20 years ago.

>>809044
>I even got married to my high school girlfriend. Very boring stuff.
Don’t underestimate how precious that is.

>>809103
liberals don't exist. it's just a shibboleth

>>809104
I mean, she could be on to something. Kinda. Translating, especially old texts, is an imprecise thing so it's believable or even likely that cultural biases gathered through the years. But I severely doubt she hasn't made the same mistakes in different directions, and I don't even know what the hell "masculinist" is supposed to mean

I leave for a few days and this is the shitshow I come back to. God you twats need to read more.

>>808403

<muh pasty anglos
Tell me how I know you're a self-hating, self-important burger without telling me.

>>809047
>When did that happen?
The trailers other marketing ploys for one thing and then various interviews where the cast members say crap like 'the Odyssey doesn't give enough female perspective'. The entire point of the story is that mortals despite their pride and greed are playthings of the gods and therefore must be humble and behave honorably or will be punished. The male god Poseidon is the antagonist, and the hero is Athena, who repeatedly leads the otherwise helpless characters to resolution and peace and essentially is the writer of the story more or less, hence why she is the goddess of cleverness and warfare and so on. Women are a central axiom of the entire story, the thing that drives men forward to survive.
>How do you know that?
By being alive and having eyes and ears. Marketing for the 1997 miniseries was minimal, interviews too, and none of them flaunted "muh women" or "muh race" in the context of performative identity politics as people did for this movie.

>>808993
This is a completely inane reframing of mythology, history and the story.
>slaves
Nope
>muh war crimes
Moralism on events from early History
>Muh loot
It's a story, it's not about the loot, it was never about the loot.

>>809044
So you're not a femcel, you're a white knight.
>he gets mad and goes on a murder spree when a bunch of hound dogs are trying to bang his female property
She didn't want to marry them you deliberately obtuse fuck, they were pressuring her into marriage and being sleazy fucks after a political position of KING through marriage. Not to mention the plot to kill her son.
>I read the odyssey… oh … 20 years ago, in middle school
You did not read The Odyssey in Middle School. The Odyssey is 500+ pages in small print. Whether history or literature you would have to spend an entire semester AT MINIMUM just for analysis on part of the book, especially as it is part of the Trojan Cycle and requires the context of said cycle. If somehow they only assigned a portion of the book then your teacher did you a disservice.
>war crimes
You don't seem to understand what that term means, as you throw it about so casually. You sound like those libs that call any mass death a "genocide" without understanding what defines the term.
>there's a lot of drama around whether she keeps her "purity"
She's a married woman with a son, it's not about purity. It's about loyalty to the man she loves among other things
>since he fucks goddesses
Yeah you definitely didn't read the book. Calypso seduces and enchants Odysseus with magic, but he eventually breaks out of it. Odysseus resisted and wished to kill Circe but was ordered by Hermes to not refuse her offer, he still refuses to stay with her and she gives him guidance to survive Scylla and Charbydis. In both contexts of the story it wasn't by his own will.
In the films Circe outright forces him into a deal and tricks him by having him stay there for years under illusion. Calypse even more so, given that he is shipwrecked and she uses magic to entrance him.

TL;DR: You're blatantly misrepresenting shit.

>>809103
Liberal infighting at its finest.

>>809106
Oh look at the internet toughguy routine! uygha you're on a half-rotted chinese chopstick carving forum, eat shit.
>“woke” messages in media were ubiquitous 20 years
No, they weren't. 20 years ago the social context was different and the way it was done was different. For example; When you got a race or sex based discrimination episode in a childrens cartoon things could be pretty blatant because its FOR CHILDREN and even then had nuances that are missing today. People didn't raceswap to flex how liberal they were, but for either concrete reasons or for fun. People making Calypso black in the 97 film wasn't a deliberate choice made because "oh this will appeal to those ni- *cough* those african-americans!".
Furthermore society of the past and now are entirely different. Today even a vague joke like laughing about the word "nega" gets people frothing at the mouth about "racism!" I have never seen a public example of racial discrimination in the past 15 years outside of some headlines, and those are as reliable as Hitler on a meth binge.

>>808349
hey I'm OP and I was just making fun of chuds who are mad at the new movie. don't overthink it.

Honestly I was just gonna leave it at that, though you're right. Shit just spiraled lol.

first person in this thread that actually read the book apart from me damn (I had a big ass encyclopedia of greek myths that was 800 pages, had one for egypt and for inuits, took me months to read)

It was actually freshman year of high school. I couldn't remember whether it was the last year of middle school or the first year of high school but now I'm starting to think it was the first year of high school. And yes we did spend about a semester on it.

wouldn't it actually make sense to have non-white people in a mythical drama that takes place in the mediterranean? the region connects directly to africa by sea and west asia isn't too far away as well. i get why having a black guy be a lord or whatever in some super big historical drama about medieval scotland would make some history nerds and fatfucks clutch their pearls but this one really doesn't make sense to me

>>809688
<muh pasty anglos
>Tell me how I know you're a self-hating, self-important burger without telling me.

how are they wrong though. pasty anglos for DECADES played mediterraneans in movies set in Rome and the Ancient Near East and nobody ever considered it "le race swapping"

OP is obviously making fun of people who get mad about it

i know i'm speaking just in general about the weird backlash
