I've been wading through Emma and I don't think I can read any further; the prose is good, but the actual story is the dullest thing I've read since I tried Kazuo Ishiguro's slop. I can't blame people for saying they hate fiction if this is what they were introduced to the medium through. Boring books should not be taught in schools, for this breeds book-haters.

I can't read anything unless Beatrice tortures and kills people every other page.

For me it was Hyperion, made worse by the fact that the first story in it was very good and it made me excited for the next 500 pages, but the rest was the most boring shit ever with the worst cliffhanger ending.

Yeah I agree. Apparently there are sequel books which are better though.

Also I think there's a problem where the best reviewed sci-fi books are usually the most literary, or the softest and most fantasy-like. Like I think people only talk about Hyperion because its a space fantasy that references old literature. Harder sci-fi then gets worse reviews and is forgotten about by the general public, apart from Andy Weir's books for some reason. But like, book reviewers want all of literature to be like the kind of modernist litfic they specialise in reading, and if something is just not a character exploration, they think it is slop. The worst reviews of all time are the ones giving one star and then saying "I can't understand this book, it is incomprehensible to me since I'm not a scientist". Then when I read it I understand it fine, despite not being a natural scientist or programmer or mathematician! The hard sci-fi books that are introspective and have great characters are then ignored.

I think the real problem is that literature classes wanna force enthusiasm onto kids.
They wanna force kids to glorify/romanticize opinions from dead poets that weren’t all that educated nor open minded to begin with

Books aren’t allowed to be read for its enjoyment and personal interpretation.

I think sci finis having a problem where people obsess over realism

>>809379
Ugh yes, thank you, I can't stand literary fiction, why can't I just have a good sci-fi

>Boring books
I hate BookTok.

Supposedly booktok 'slop' romantasy are actually just fantasy stories that are aimed at women, though I do agree the prose is bad in a lot of cases. Also I think there is a lot of sexism shaming women for enjoying erotica.

What are some good hard scifi that you like?

I'm reading Accellerando right now and it is such a funny book. It's like an accelerationist singularity book but also basically Eurocommunist theory where the main character in the first part works for the Italian Communist Party who believe that there is no point in trying to do a planned economy through 16,000 AI corporations (which is the MC's plan) because soon capitalism itself will become obsolete. The book is basically entirely technical jargon and gets crazier every chapter. It also has well realised characters who it managed to make me care about which is surprising. I'm really enjoying it so far.

It is pretty insufferably accelerationist though and if you aren't that kind of liberal it does get annoying how corporations are used for literally everything.

There’s more shame for men enjoying erotica than for women

Men are only allowed to enjoy porn or action-adventure

Is Jane Eyrie kino? Kinda want to read it after finishing a Chekhov collection I got from my school library.

I liked it. But it has weird phrenology and spirituality stuff in it.
