I think a driver of the "Thing, Japan" phenomena is that the western version of stuff tends to be genuinely awful or non-existent, so when people in the west look at how people do things in other countries that are at least competent at it, they're excited to see someone be competent at it. And since Japan is very visible in the west thanks to anime exports, that excitement tends to be directed toward Japan.
I think I've seen this with China and Europe when it comes to trains, and China when it comes to general infrastructure, games and animation.

Yeah, there's online/indie stuff like TADC that's humongous, but that's a very new phenomenon and we can't be sure of its consequences as of yet. Will it destroy the world? We'll see.

It's because cartoons are seen as inferior to the platonic ideal of 3D actors. Animation is viewed as childish which is seen as inferior to the fully developed human. That is why I think western animation doesn't have self respect because of the metaphysical baggage, Japanese also see immaterial objects as having soul because of animist paganism.
