I don't see the benefit. The whole point of farming and to a lesser extent agriculture is that you can get mad gains by having a machine do most of the work. At a push, having people do like 1 month's work experience (or maybe even a half day's work experience every week for a year) so they've got some awareness of it would do the job.

On the other hand, if it was a practical apprenticeship for anything you wanted, e.g. while doing a politics degree your university will force you to make that webcomic you've been telling yourself you'd do for the last 5 years, or write short stories, or something like that, I would be all for it. Superficially this cuts directly against the grain of the suggestion (instead of steel, I want people to make art!?) but both are, frankly, productivity in a way that no think-tank policy-based-evidence slop pdf ever will be. They cultivate the underlying skill of actually finishing your projects.

Every part of society treats blue collar work that way at least from what I've seen. Maybe there is some attempt to sell the trades as somehow better but that's only sold onto people after they've failed at getting more white collar jobs. Even when parents have blue collar jobs they'll usually try to get their kids to study to get better paying and more comfortable jobs. Often times parents use blue collar or manual labor jobs as a threat against younger people they see as misbehaving so no wonder those jobs are looked down on.

I never said those kind of jobs are unnecessary. We always need janitors and caretakers and teachers. In fact, I say those jobs are under appreciated.
