One theory is that collecting foreskins from enemies was originally a form of trophy hunting among Bronze Age levantine warriors, not unlike scalping. Later, some people may have started circumcizing themselves so that their enemies couldn't do it, and after centuries it took on religious significance. Imagine a cowboy shaving his head so injuns couldn't scalp him.

I'm pretty sure cutting off parts of people started as a way to indicate their status as slaves, I dunno if circumcision was part of that though. I'm not so much a history expert as a guy who goes down barely remembered rabbit holes so maybe someone else can clarify.
