<bullies and random arseholesA Geoff Thompson "fence" stance and tell them to stay back (This has worked so far.) I ignore all insults and attempts to goad me.
I train a few things but in terms of legal carry,I've got a fat fountain pen. I'd generally be squeamish about knifing someone. You don't want to be thinking am I going to get in trouble for doing this, when you should be acting. But you can use a heavy pen like a kubotan or yawara stick. There are a few good instructional videos. The one by Rick Faye of the Minnesota Kali group is good. But don't do what he does and train to miss, i.e. go around the real target. Do it lightly instead where you would really hit . If you can get hold of it , Ted Lucay Lucay's video on "pocket stick " is the best. I used to have an old VHS tape of it from Shaolin Way in Chinatown in London, but long gone now, sadly.
These techniques are good to train because pocket stick techniques can be recycled for hammer fists if you don't have a weapon. (Punch, and then roll the forearm at the elbow to strike with a hammer fist.)

<ones you can see comingThese often seem to conduct a bit of a risk assessment. Is it worth them attacking you for your phone or money, or are you going to put up a fight? Are there easier victims?
When I work outside late at night I carry a "wild finder" torch. It emits bright cyan light. I tested it on myself. It make me want to puke. So it might be handy if there were a few people and you wanted to even things up a bit.
<ones you don't see comingIt's just going to be a matter of luck if you survive the initial attack. I was pushed off my bike at speed from behind once. Luckily, I landed in a crash barrier and not the wall. I got up, looked around to see who did it, did pull a pocket knife this time, and they fucked off. Without saying a word. I'm not sure if this was a robbery attempt, or random nihilists filming for TikTok.
