what you have to understand is that this isn't the natural baseline for human beings, people are smart when they need to be and dumb when they can get away with it, and in high-tech industrial western society the middle-class majority only need to be smart when they're at work doing their assigned tasks and the rest of the time they are allowed and even encouraged to be as dumb as they can possibly be. intelligence isn't absolute and it doesn't live inside people's brains, intelligence is relational and it is in what people do, how they interact with the world and with themselves. if meritocracy actually worked and the working class actually were as stupid as the system deemed them to be there would be no need for union-busting, tremendous effort is required to keep the "stupid" people from doing anything smart.
