Why are third-worlders so retarded?
They didn't try hard enough to secularize or weren't allowed to by stronger forces. They probably need some kind of cultural revolution and that includes the USA. Mexico at least tried to shut down the Catholic church after their revolution which their lower percentage compared to the US.
the dead hand of tradition was never broken for them, for one reason or another.
the china-india comparison is the one you want to watch. as late as the 1970s commentators were saying that India was clearly the one to watch while China were a little gang of ideological nutters… but China is now much richer than India.
why? because china had mao, and while there might have been some excesses in smashing up antiquities in the form of old temples or whatever, the upshot was that antiquated attitudes really were smashed up. perhaps most prominently, the position of women improved immeasurably, the stranglehold of landlords and rural social relations - cults, sects, family patriarchs and elders - was smashed to pieces with all that struggle session stuff, and literacy was given serious emphasis.
india by contrast attempted similar reforms in a less radical form under a bourgeois democracy, but found them vetoed by conservative interests. marriage reform was shut down, all the old social relationships continue to weigh people down and dictate their lives, and as a result educational resources were focused towards elites. india paired world class education for some with zero education for others.
thus when Deng appeared and started economic reform, Chinese growth exploded much faster than India's did when they did the same, because China was a structurally modern society which happened to be poor, a society of more-or-less individuals who could move where there was employment, where women could work freely, and so on. India by contrast remained backwards, so reforms had far less effect.
Now, not every society is so stark, but that's the basic underlying contrast. America is the biggest outlier (but then, a lot of the people who moved there were religious freaks and many of its institutions were captured by religious freaks…) and Israel is perhaps the funniest one (36% of people in god's promised land don't really care for god!)
what even is religion in china? seems like they don't do buddhism for a long time and most of their divine believes are just stuff that aren't grounded in a pantheon with all mighty gods with a holy scripture and a church. been that way for a long time so i doubt religion has had as strong a grip as abrahamic ones, and the cultural revolution already destroyed what religion they had left
