china wasn't really an imperialist country until relatively recently in history, at least not in the "sailing around the world and conquering and colonizing things" sense of the word imperialism. and even today their global capitalist imperialism is quite restrained compared to their western contemporaries. i think the reason for this is just geography, asia is the largest continent and the region of china is an enormous geographic region that basically has everything civilization could ever need right there on their doorstep, a massive expanse of land with every biome more or less represented, a huge coastline with access to the pacific ocean, etc. going back to ancient times chinese civilization has always sort of viewed itself as the center of the world, all the other lands were just the fragmented periphery of lesser civilizations and there was no reason to go out and explore the world and find strange new lands to conquer and pillage and colonize, they were already at the top of the mountain.
