Was Donnie Darko a marxist film?
yeah sure why not
I used to think that most of the media was secretly sending me Marxist messages and that it was only inevitable for me to thereby become a total Marxist at some point in my life, it's what was meant to happen to me. But then as I got older, I went through several different phases of belief systems and understandings without a clear-cut answer.
I went from thinking, ah yes, most of my favorite artists are Marxists!
To then thinking, no they're just vaguely liberal or something, because that's playing it safe
to thinking, the media is not free at all, all the messages and meaning behind anything is heavily curtailed by the conglomerate media entities behind them
until finally realizing that it would seem, most of the media is not actually all that liberal at all for sure, they just want you to think they're liberal from first impressions
so to answer the question, Donnie Darko is not liberal for sure…
But I think the movie doesn't really gloss over politics all too much
It kind of has a liberal tone and aesthetic, man when I watched the movie in the 2000s the 80s seemed so long ago
It's kind of interesting to think about how the 1980s theme overlaps and fits with the time travel plot they both seem like they would point to something deeper in the film
No.
The film is about a the universe literally revolving around some ultra-bougie teenager so that he can get laid and learn some lessons. The manipulated dead are puppets in his individualist masturbation.

The suits don't give a fuck at all what's in the media they produce as long as it makes money. Maybe some issues they feel strongly about like Israel or something. You can make a movie about how Hollywood executives are all evil Satanists putting messages into movies to brainwash children, and they'd still produce it and distribute it. Being anticapitalist in movies is really the norm. I could name dozens and dozens of movies where the villains are corporations and rich people and blahh blahh, they don't care. It's not a conspiracy either, they just literally don't care as long as it makes money, and as long as it's not anti-Israel.

Is Southland Tales marxist?
Everything is Marxist if you squint hard enough.
