forest bandits suck, and so do your recruits, so in the start you're actually better off holding your recruits back so they can turn into knights, while you just slice through them yourself for the xp and loot

should be fine in most cases, if your guy doesn't suck

Literally this, you just walk backwards and kite them and they will literally single file fall on your sword as long as you can manage the block attack rhythm while walking backwards
