Marx in the Manifesto (1848) thought that the struggle would simply be between an international proletariat versus capitalists, but the later Marx (1869-70) perceived a lack of solidarity between members of the proletariat themselves, foreshadowed by Engels in 1845, on the topic of immigration. Engels was also prescient in determining a "labour aristocracy" driving a wedge between members of the working class, as early as 1858. Marx imagined that the petit-bourgeois would be proletarianised, but this never quite came, with more and more rentiers eating scraps from the master's table. Engels encounters this (though dismissively) in 1873, around controversies concerning the tenants and landlords. Here, the old class war (e.g. pre-1848) had again emerged as a primary contradiction of life. The emergence of Fascism is said to begin in 1919, but really occurs in 1893, with the Aigues-Mortes Massacre, where Italian immigrants were murdered by Frenchman, causing the neologism of "National Socialism" to emerge in the words of Maurice Barrés in 1898. The end of the century saw the new reactionary counter-tendency of the working class, towards a protectionist policy for wages; a resentment of free trade in the labour market – like the unionised aristocracy of labour. Lenin by 1902 saw that trade unionism was incapable from its own efforts to theorise or struggle for socialism. The working class perceives its own primary contradictions, not between their employers, but between fellow enployees. The workers, in their own desires, do not want socialism.

You copied this from smith-anon in the political economy thread. It's a good bit of history, but I think US workers were slaughtering chinese railroad workers in the 1870s for the same reason.

This has former precedence in the peasant revolt of 1381, where English guildsmen murdered Flemish guildsmen in London - thus, "trade union consciousness" leads to this sort of reaction, as a direct interest for the protection of labour.
