What is the materialist explication for this phenomenon occurring within academic circles and the wider so-called decolonial movement?

  1. Tweets aren't real life.
  2. Likely two different factions, merely grouped as "academic" because they both write essays.

People think decolonization or revolution are things that look like the climatic scene of a disney movie.

right-wing tier slop post. there is no inherent contradiction between authoritarianism and decolonisation. this tweet works the same with almost any noun or adjective except "colonialist"

Academics: decolonise food, decolonise love, decolonise therapy, de–
Iran: *decolonises the middle east*
Academics: Iran is statuesque / energy / fancy / candidate / federal / relationship / gusty / preference / sleepy / member / wiggly

I don't think decolonization looks like an imperialist wannabe regional power suppressing groups like the kurds who want national liberation

Because they're a controlled opposition. They're waiting for Woke 2.0 to be the new thing so that the Ford Foundation and other financial backers of what is now called Woke 1.0 open the money faucet back up.

Why are academics like this?

"Decolonialism" has been appropriated by liberal institutions to deflect from actual liberatory projects and ideology.

The ruling class can't appropriate or co-opt what always belonged to them in the first place. After the Great Recession and Occupy, there was a need to redirect the momentum away from class struggle and towards identitarianism in parallel with the establishment of what would later be known as the "Alt-Right." Naturally, Intersectionality, Decoloniality, "Read Settlers" and Privilege Theory fit that bill. The petit-bougeois milleu that makes up that majority of the established Left in North America and Oceania took it up because it provided a justification for their class' natural contempt towards the proletariat. As a bonus, their anti-Marxism and ethno-nationalism would lead them to support the balkanization of Russia and China as "settler-colonialist", thus serving the interests not only domestically but uniting the "Left" with the aims of NATO and Japan. Their conclusions were always going to be anti-Communist, which is why it was and is so heavily promoted. If Decoloniality was ever a genuine threat to capitalist power, they would have been destroyed.
