I like to read polling every now and then, and one thing that stuck out was pollsters were baffled that there was a trend of young people who wanted more government regulation of the economy but simultaneously didn't trust the government. Now to a Socialist this is a real simple thing to explain: they understand that the Government as it exists serves only to enrich the already fabulously wealthy and offers them nothing in terms of help. To pollsters invested in traditional narratives of government and liberal and conservative ideology, it's a contradiction. Clearly if these kids are "very liberal" (because "socialist" isn't a distinct category in many of these polls) they should trust the government, see it as their friend, and love it because there's this idea that the New Deal and all created a section of voters who just love the Government. They see "Government" as this neutral thing that can either be big or small, or loved or hated, but not that one can despise their current Government because it fails to provide for them.
A lot of these folks are genuine believers in their stupid narratives while some are pure cynics. AOC for example recently said that plenty of establishment Democrats came up to her and said that it was going to be her fault, personally, that Republicans won because she's "too radical". Bill Maher commemorated Mamdani's victory with some whining that he was going to inaugurate a new era of Republican political power. They're so far removed from average people that I think they'll look at polling and
genuinely believe Americans like their insurance companies.
I think there's room for a Socialist party to grow here, but I think it has to be agnostic on the culture war and definitively on the Left and propose Left Wing economic policy.
