The reason why this is occurring is an interplay of various things, ranging from seeing other international populations (e.g., Iranians, Palestinians, etc.) as being the recipients of American/Western hegemony, to a justified historical skepticism toward American foreign policy that eventually becomes so excessive that it turns into an almost reflexive opposition to anything associated with the United States or the West.
Many of these people are of American or Western origin, some of whom are LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, racial or ethnic minorities, or otherwise belong to groups that have historically experienced discrimination within Western societies. Because of their own experiences with marginalization, they may understandably become deeply distrustful of the political institutions, cultural norms, or foreign-policy narratives produced by their own countries. They then sometimes identify very strongly with populations abroad whom they perceive as similarly oppressed by American or Western power.
Unfortunately, rather than evaluating every government, political movement, or conflict according to the same standards, they begin dividing the world into an imperialist Western camp and an anti-imperialist camp. Once that framework becomes internally crystallized enough, almost anyone opposing the United States can be interpreted as part of a broader struggle against imperialism, even when those actors themselves are authoritarian, imperialistic, socially reactionary, or actively repressing the very kinds of people these Western leftists claim to support.
This obviously creates some pretty strange contradictions, as someone can correctly recognize the discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ people, women, ethnic minorities, or political dissidents in the United States and then suddenly become extremely reluctant to criticize a government that imprisons dissidents, suppresses independent media, persecutes minorities, or violently represses protesters simply because that government is hostile toward Washington, Israel, etc. In some cases, they will acknowledge those abuses but treat them as comparatively unimportant because American imperialism is viewed as the primary contradiction from which nearly every other political problem supposedly derives.
I think this is also why you sometimes see the political agency of people living in these countries being really sadly ignored. An Iranian protesting against the Islamic Republic will be dismissed as a Western-backed regime-change supporter; a Taiwanese person who does not want to be governed by the PRC becomes a victim of American propaganda; or a Ukrainian who supports closer relations with Europe becomes a NATO proxy. Instead of treating these people as individuals with their own political beliefs, historical experiences, and legitimate grievances, everything they do gets interpreted primarily through their relationship with the United States and Israel.
Personally, I find this type of American/European youth to be too emotional, as many of them don't understand that despite all of them experiencing similar oppression by the imperial core, they don't see that cultural, philosophical, religious, and historical differences can produce radically different values, political goals, and understandings of liberation. Two groups can both experience oppression without therefore sharing the same worldview. A queer American leftist, an Iranian Islamist, a Palestinian secular nationalist, a Kurdish socialist, and a conservative religious Arab may all have legitimate grievances against American or Western foreign policy while simultaneously disagreeing with one another on almost every major question concerning religion, sexuality, gender, nationalism, democracy, or the organization of society.
I think some Western leftists project their own political values onto these populations because they assume that being oppressed naturally makes someone progressive. It does not. An oppressed person can be socialist, liberal, conservative, religious fundamentalist, nationalist, monarchist, feminist, homophobic, secular, authoritarian, democratic, or practically anything else. Oppression tells you something about the power relationship that person exists within; it does not automatically tell you what that person believes.
This is why solidarity, in my opinion, should not require romanticization. I can personally believe that Palestinians deserve freedom from occupation without pretending that every Palestinian political organization shares my values. I can also oppose American intervention against Iran while also supporting Iranians who oppose the Islamic Republic. Those positions only appear contradictory if you have already reduced international politics into two moral camps where one side must always be the oppressor and the other must always be virtuous.
Also, I feel like another piece of it is that they're sort of ashamed of being Western and they sort of romanticize the Orient because it just seems so exotic and different. I am a Filipino immigrant with a father who comes from the old leftist tradition, and my interactions with Western leftists in the past have sometimes given me the impression that certain people are not merely expressing solidarity with non-Western societies, but are also projecting onto them a kind of imagined authenticity that they feel is missing from their own personal lives (i.e., American culture is bland and without seasoning, eating the same food gets boring after awhile). There is almost this assumption that because a society is non-Western, colonized, indigenous, or historically oppressed, it must therefore possess some deeper cultural purity or moral wisdom that the modern West has lost. However, this is quite orientalist because instead of treating people in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, or Latin America as ordinary human beings living in complicated societies, it turns them into symbols of resistance and revolutionary virtue.
