Honestly I see it less as an age thing and more patience. Legend of The Galactic Heroes is kind of like Star Trek in that the most important or memorable parts aren't the battles, its the conversations between characters. Like its a show where the two ostensible "main characters" actually sit down and discuss their particular worldviews over coffee, and that's the coolest shit ever.

Like there's an episode in the show that just goes into how the Empire in the series came about, and while chuds can see it as "based" or whatever, what it really points to is a guy riding to power on an exhausted and nihilistic populace that lost its will to act collectively. It was people looking for some singular figure to "save" them and the guy ended up going mad with power. And ironically enough you see that in chuds embracing the Rudolf figure as some "savior"; people can't or wont exercise the will or responsibility to save themselves, so they just want "daddy" to do it for them.
