The biggest problem imo is that we don't have any way to actually quantify the losses of unequal exchange. Say when Indian compradors are building sweatshops to export iphone to America, it is not only the underpricing of embodied labour in exports that represent a loss for the imperialized countries but the lost opportunity cost, i.e the fact that the sweatshops couldve produced things for the local economy instead. How do we quantify this? In the end a lot of tercermundismo just assume a base level of what ideal development couldve been absent exploitation, i.e everyone would be as rich as Western Europeans, but this is a category error because Westerners only become that rich because of exploitation and not from what a "normal" process would've looked like. (This is not even going to weeds of the fact that even in a hypothetical equilibrium, economy of scale ,geography and human capital means that development would still be uneven).

I'm really trying to figure out if we are close enough or within the hellstate necessary for a "revolution" or just plodding time until some moderate reins in capital. This has of course been the case for a minute. So far I see four things stopping and supporting it:

An economic revolution cannot happen without a social revolution in the United States, an evolution of our consciousness and how we see ourselves and our culture, a new culture. So much will have to be discarded, and so much more will have to be created. And I believe that is just as important a task of a revolutionary today as an election would be, as canvassing would be, as most of the DSA's internal structure is predicated on electoralism, on elections as the height of struggle. And yes, there are working groups for mutual aid, but I think a cultural shift that affects the individual psyche of the people has got to happen because there's nothing really connecting us together in any sort of metaphysical sense. And I think in this scenario it would be good to think about the writings of Stalin.

I think this is ironic, I know I just referenced Stalin, because he wrote on the nation state and how it is formulated, and that is one of his key contributions to theory. And this is what I'm talking about when I talk about theory and how it should be digested and how it should be interpreted. Because, look, I'm not an authoritarian communist. And I think the way to go about a cultural revolution in the United States is through prefigurative politics, as already practiced by anarchist groups in the United States. In addition to the fact that climate collapse necessitates mutual aid solidarity among people who previously did not have that.

Being from South Louisiana, any time that there is a hurricane, people come together. Yes, there's crime and yes, there's looting. I'm low-key kind of pro-looting, but there is crime and there is violence that comes with that collapse of infrastructure, of governmental apparatus. But, by and large, people come together to support each other. People share resources, people share food, people share time together. The power's out in the whole city, so everybody comes to the church and there's a big cookout and the groceries are going to go bad anyways, let's share them amongst each other and let's eat together.

These are real things that happen in real time in America. I think the predisposition to assuming that the American psyche is inherently antithetical to solidarity misses the real-world instances of that solidarity. The capitalist system has to work overtime to produce the fuck-you-got-mine culture that exists now. That's the way to get people to consume. The way to build a consumer-based economy is to build a consumer-based psyche. We know that the hegemony can be changed. It can be fought against. Gramsci speaks of this.

And so to me, one, you have to start with the youth, and you have to understand that there is a generational divide in America, right? So, the boomer class, I don't think you're typically going to get them to move away from their capitalist predisposition. But the boomer class is going to be shrinking continuously. They have reached their peak of their rule, right? And they are the ones who are the most true believers of the system because they have seen in real time that capitalism can uplift the productive forces. They saw the peak of that. Now we're seeing the collapse. It's not an argument that capitalism has failed to uplift these productive forces. It's that history has moved beyond the necessitation of capitalism, right? But if you're under 50, under 40, the younger you go, the more radical people are. And yes, there are all these cultural narratives that millennials and Gen Z are leaning more conservative, and oh, look at these talking heads that are platformed by these billionaires. They're Zoomers. So, of course, they're working overtime to prevent this radicalization. But it is happening, okay?

So when people are gathering, and people want to gather, it's a human inclination. The mechanisms of capital in this K-shaped economy have destroyed the concept of the third space. They have destroyed the means of gathering. They have destroyed the social productive means, unless you are in the top 10%, so to speak. When a cocktail is $15, those places are not catering to your typical working-class person. They're catering to a higher echelon of person, which makes up a smaller demographic, and that demographic continues to shrink as prices go up: K-shaped economy, right?

So the capitalist, in their pursuit of profit, has taken the promises of capitalism from the masses, those promises that provided the social contract, if you will, to enable people to be okay with the exploitation that comes with capitalism, right? You are much happier to be exploited by the capitalist if you have healthcare, can own a home, can put your kids through college, can have a place to hang out, right? Can, you know, have extra money to go do social events and participate in the world. This was how it was in the '70s and the '80s. This is why the boomer generation still believes in this system. Whereas people who exist now fundamentally do not have access to these same means, right?

And so, in a sense, they've given us the space to build something that can defeat them through their own means of pursuing profit. They have dug their own grave. They are their own grave diggers, as Marx said, right? And so if we look at these anarchist groups and how they're building things out, they're building things out through a mutual aid culture, a culture of I uplift you, you uplift me, we are both uplifted. And so the more that we reproduce this social space through that culture, the less power that the consumer culture has, especially when less and less people have access to that consumer culture. Because they're perfectly content, they, being the capitalist financial Wall Street class, to give us Discord calls and give us this panopticonic internet ecosystem as the only space left, right? But this will not hold because people are inherently social. People want to be out and about more. People want to create art.

You can make it impossible to start a band because nobody has access to housing. People will go play and practice in the fucking forest. I've seen this happen. Mark Fisher talks about how the availability of housing allows for artists to flourish, which enables deeper social reproduction of that art. Whereas now housing is scarce, so you're seeing significantly less art from the working masses, and those who do make art are having to make it within deeper market constraints. So there's much less room for experimentation.

However, if the mutual aid social reproductive system can overtake and continue to grow in this emergent, almost like a slime fungus, how it branches out and finds these most optimal paths, right, through these different nodes, then we could see this cultural social revolution happen. And that is really the key, I think. Before we can build anything, we have to build something that is shared. Before we can build a new, like a mirror, we have to build something worth seeing in that mirror, right?

And so when I see that the Food Not Bombs groups are pushing, they're hosting raves, they're hosting art exhibitions, they're, you know, using the funds from DJ sessions to support immigrant rights groups, like, that's a culture being built in real time. When I see bands get together, you know, four or five bands get together and they drop an EP and they say, look, we're selling this EP, all the money will go to this mission, all the money will go to this. That is real cultural aptitude, because those people aren't making very much money, because they're existing outside of the corporate consumer hegemony. They're not making that much money, and then they're deciding to use that money to push solidarity, to build working-class solidarity. That's post-consumer. That's post-fuck-you-got-mine culture. That's the new wave.

And so to me, as someone who does run a magazine, who does believe that this is the proper method of uplifting the people at this stage in our history, right? Who follows a chaos Marxist-adjacent line that specifically says that we must create this culture. I think the DSA, a group that has already captured so many of these organic intellectuals, should be less focused on electoralism and more focused on building these modes of cultural reproduction and acting as this network, this steward of this new working-class culture that is being built.

And so if I was going to make a caucus in the DSA, that would explicitly be the focus of the caucus. If you're an artist, a creator, you would be in this caucus. If you're a member of a band, you're in this caucus. Because these are the people who actively make culture. So to me it's like, I don't need to tell you what my tendency is. Oh, what flavor of leftist are you? Because we're building a new culture in real time. So it doesn't, you know what I mean? It would be a caucus where anyone could join, and you could be a member of other caucuses too.

But, like, everyone tells me that the guy who's hosting these raves or building these networks between artist groups and these art collectives and these bands and hosting these events and all that, throwing the kickback, is a waste of time. It is not militant. It is anarchist nonsense. There's no point. And in my mind, this is, like, dogmatic thinking that is preventing us from really building what we need to be building. Because none of our forefathers, none of the people who won, did so without a social element to it. It's called socialism.

And so if your only methodology of seizing victory is through electoral wins, you're missing the social reproductive element, and your electoral wins will come slower. Because no campaign is predicated on the networks of a single organizer. It's predicated on the foundations of prefigurative politics being built in real time. That's why a candidate comes to the DSA asking for an endorsement. They want to have access to that network, that system, that foundation. And how much better would it be if you could say, yeah, we'll endorse you, and we'll be handing out cards for your campaign at our rave this weekend. We've already got a hundred RSVPs. It's happening at a warehouse that we have logistical access to because we're an actual organization with over a hundred members in it, our chapter alone.

Let's talk scenes and subcultures and why they are dead or dying. They're dead or dying because of capitalism. All right, you can close the article now. I just want to zoom in here on the punk scene in particular, because it's probably the one that it's most known for its politics and political ethos. We can start by addressing the elephant in the room: the Nazi punks fuck off culture of direct confrontation with fascists in the scene is almost certainly overstated and ran through an almost mythological lens. But it actually did happen. People were much more militantly against right-wing culture and fascist culture in the scene.

But there's been a shift, both in terms of the level of politic that is acceptable to support on the left side of things, as well as a much more ambient energy towards those with right-wing sympathies. And the reason for that is material and is to do with the economics of the scene. Like I said before, housing and the availability of housing and the low cost of rent allows for multiple cultural spaces to emerge, whether that's two band members living in a house and people are practicing in the garage, or multiple bars and clubs and venues existing in the same city because rent is lower. Well, this economics, this structure no longer exists. The material conditions of the '80s and '90s allowed for the scenes and subcultures to flourish because there was more available space for them to exist.

In addition, the left politics has become much more liberalized due to market forces. Punk rock pizza. Because nothing says punk rock like paying your back-of-the-house folks $17 an hour while you run a small business. It has become a commercialized brand, recuperated into the capitalist superstructure. Being punk became as vague as being progressive. There's a removal of the material class element from the subculture. The economics of the subculture, the working-class ethos of the subculture, subliminates into identity politics that are compatible with capitalism. The venue with the safe space banner that still pays their workers $15 an hour. The cafe that hosts the hardcore shows, but the workers at the cafe see their tips withheld so that the owner can go to Burning Man.

But in combination with the higher cost of rent and the less availability of space, there becomes a monopolization that requires less militancy. You effectively do need, in some way, you need the libertarian guy, who's—he's problematic, and yes, he follows some weird folks on social media, and he might even repost the occasional Nick Fuentes video, but he works for free and he buys a lot of drinks, and that economic flow is necessary to keep the rent paid, because the rent's going up every six months to every year. And it's not just one guy. There's groups of these folks. So the militancy has to decrease to allow for both the liberal progressive capitalist-friendly ethos as well as lowering the militancy to allow for the right-wing customer to at the very least purchase and supply the location with profit.

Therefore, any and all of all these scenes, right? All these subcultures, are being drug away from their working-class class solidarity ethos and underlying principles to be recuperated into capitalism, to be resold. No longer do you need to live your life with a mutual aid principle in your heart to be punk. You just need to go to the right store, maybe order the battle jacket on Shein, I shop at Punk Rock Pizza, I vend 3D printed collectibles at the punk rock flea market. It's divorced from the working class so totally that it becomes a costume.

But yet, because even socialism itself is a subculture under capitalism, with its own in-group language, its own memetic structures, its own underlying principles, people are still gravitating towards subcultures, looking for meaning and identity and personhood and community and connection. Therefore, in my opinion, it would behoove the DSA to begin to operate on the grounds of the cultural reproduction. One, because it will allow socialism to break out of being its own insular subculture, its own sort of groupthink. And that's not to say that the theory or the intellectual elements that we engage with are wrong or bad, but it is a subcultural thing.

I mean, in the same way that the punk community has tendencies. Oh, I'm more of a crust punk. I'm really into the hardcore scene. Me, I like to keep it a little slower. I'm more into, like, the metal-infused things. Oh, I'm a core guy. Metalcore, post-hardcore. I love the core. There's all these different tendencies. Socialism is the same way. I'm an anarcho-communist. Me, I really like to post meme edits of Mao, sigma edits of Mao. Oh, me, oh me, I'm more of a traditional anarchist. I'm really into reading Emma Goldman. Oh, me, I'm a Marxist-Leninist. You know, I love the USSR. I have a whole—I run an Instagram page that's a gallery of USSR images. Like, these are subcultural tendencies in the same way that punk subculture moves and exists. It's the same ideas, right?

And so in order for socialism to not be this subcultural apparatus that currently exists, and in order to gain wider acceptance and become not a subculture but the culture, it must spread and reevaluate the subcultures that currently exist. It is indeed revolutionary when a rave happens, and it happens with a combination of local organizers, the local DSA chapter, maybe the local Food Not Bombs group, maybe another political party, because now we've all come together because everybody just wants to dance at the end of the day, and there's no space to do it. And the more we reclaim that space, the less it is driven by the market forces. Because we're not the landlord venue owner that is willing to accept market forces that predicate the destruction of the internal principles.

Instead of having to sell a product to keep the place open, there are other models of solidarity-based funding. An example of a space would be Expressions St. Pete, which is a queer-focused community center. They have washers, dryers, food pantries. They host events, and it's ran through a combination of solidarity donations, ticket sales, and membership and dues, and in collaboration with other local groups. Through this means this exists. That is a model of infrastructure building that allows us to cultivate this new socialist culture.

To me, this is probably where the real battle lies: taking socialism from being its own subcultural apparatus where we post sigma edits of Joseph Stalin on TikTok, to being the culture, because it is built from cultures that actual working-class people engage with, and not 100-year-old memetic structures that have predicated who we are and how we identify with our politics.
