Many admit they'd like to keep Syria disunified and chaotic, to give them "freedom of action" just in case a unified Syria is "not their friend." Israel has also occupied Mt. Hermon and tried to bring the Druze in southern Syria under their umbrella, which is also a statement to Erdogan and Jolani that they're going to protect their little sectarian enclave in the south and bomb Damascus whenever they want to. The fall of Assad also now means the Turks and Israelis are now butting up against each other, and suffice to say that they don't like each other these days, to put it mildly.
The Israelis are also lobbying in Washington to get the U.S. to support a decentralized Syria with regional autonomy for the minorities. The U.S. and CENTCOM does not support this. The U.S. wants a centralized government under Jolani and is starting to pull the plug on the YPG. But the U.S. also wants to play an intermediating role like during the Cold War. The U.S. wants to deal with Erdogan who is the single most powerful leader in the Middle East, and that's the reality.
So what happened, from my point of view, is that Assad remnants backed by Iran made a push a few months ago to topple Jolani, and they were trying to convince the U.S. to support them because some Christians have been killed by takfiri jihadi guys associated with Jolani, and they played that aspect up, but then Jolani's government called for a jihad through the mosques, and the jihadis went to the coastal areas and killed those guys along with a lot of civilians.
But that's a humanitarian issue, it's not the number one strategic concern for the U.S., which is to defeat Iran, and the U.S. is trying to explain this to the Israelis, and the Americans tell the Israelis they don't know what they're doing or what the hell they're talking about. But that's because objectively (and as weird as it sounds), Israel and Iran now have the same interests in Syria, both have an interest in keeping Syria fragmented (and also keeping the Turks out). Not that Israel and Iran are allies of any sort, but that's why there's this weird alignment between these ex-regime supporters and Israel shills who are screaming about Jolani killing Christians.
