The resistance to it was fueled by racism for sure but you can't really understand the ferocity of it without considering how it was tied into a whole integrated social order (that didn't simply go away either, it modified / adapted / evolved).
Friend of mine in rural Louisiana saw a white guy get physically thrown out of a bar (went airborne like Superman) for calling a black man the n-word and the other white guy who tossed him shouted that he can't say that "to his face." He didn't say he couldn't say it theoretically, just not in that context. It's good ol-fashioned polite racism with probably less neo-Nazis and angry racism like you see in Idaho. Most rednecky people around my area are either from West Texas or Louisiana and various rural counties around here. The Democratic Socialists of America are trying to redefine what it means to be a working-class voter in New York City.
