I've made the comparison before, but Trump might be similar to a Julian the Apostate figure. Granted, while you can read Julian as a tragic figure and certainly intelligent, he ultimately was a reactionary. He was a figure that wanted to "turn back the clock" as it were and represented the last dying embers of a culture that'd been relegated to the hinterlands. Like the very term "Paganism" was rooted in a negative depiction of rural Roman subjects, "hicks" in a word.

Trump's trying to revive the superstructure of this Boomer patriotism, and where Julian was obsessed with restoring old Pagan religious practices and Temples, Trump is desperately trying to coat everything in gold and build monuments that are big and gaudy and symbolic of America returning to some "golden age" or whatever, and he's a joke for it, much like how some Christians treated Julian.

Like one old story had Julian mocked for wearing a beard after being cleanshaven had grown more popular in the Empire, and it rattled him bad enough to hire bards to write about how its not the outside that counts but his "pagan virtue" that should be seen.
