i think what people are really concerned about, particularly europeans, is the possibility of a major upset in the post-ww2 geopolitical power balance that they have been accustomed to and building their entire economies around for the past 80 years. it's the same reason they've been scrambling to figure out ways to reduce their dependence on the us and build up their own renewable energy industries and militaries and even hedging their bets on china wherever necessary, because they know that russia would have never tried to pull this shit in earlier years and it is only because the us is failing and weakening and losing its global dominance that russia is pushing westward trying to take over ukraine. and it is very likely that the us will continue to get weaker and russia will be further emboldened to expand further into europe and invade more countries and try to take control over fossil resources/pipelines and western europe will end up in a difficult position, having to choose between abandoning their allies and eating russia's shit and praying it doesn't get any worse like they did with the germans, or retaliating and potentially starting world war 3. the cultural attitudes of russians and ukrainians aren't really that relevant to this, everyone already knows they're a bunch of drunken authoritarian bigots and even the most progressive democratic socialist countries in western europe aren't much better culture-wise, norwegians and swedes and finns are just as capable of drinking a quart of jager and beating up immigrants and throwing bananas onto a soccer field as anyone else is.
