Honestly I don't understand what's the US's deal with death penalty execution. I mean I understand the concern about not causing useless suffering, but if they really want to make state sanctionned murder painless, then the key is speed. The prisoner won't suffer if they die before the pain can reach their brain.

Black nationalism doesn't make sense because there isn't really a "black nation." That's not to say black nationalists are counterrevolutionary or something, but it's not like you can conjure a national identity into existence. Many distinct black nations exist in the world, including outside of Africa, but there is no single generically black one. Populations of black people in the west are diffused over wide areas that don't connect, so trying to establish a nation out of those would be at best an uphill battle.

All this however is not to say that black people should settle for "a seat at the table" i.e. mere inclusion into a white (supremacist) society. Assimilation equals subordination, and nobody ought to face that. The challenge is constructing a new paradigm that suits the conditions of the "nation within a nation" which is not actually a nation at all, and it seems like there are natural allies in that struggle in indigenous peoples.

Hobsbawm iirc drew an analogy between the Texas revolution and national movements in Europe in the same time that intensified in 1848. Like the Polish independence movement (and "November uprising"). Texas would get absorbed by the U.S. later and the Texians were Anglo settlers from other places though.

There was also a counter-revolution of sorts in Mexico which abolished the federal republic for a unitary state run by the military with Catholicism as the state religion. The Texas declaration of independence is all about that and being mad that the original federal constitution got scrapped. Anyways, the fact that the Anglos spoke a diferent language and had a different religion was important (although some spoke Spanish, would go to Mexico City, were involved in Mexican politics).

Reddit liberals are annoying and say it was just about slavery, like the war between Texas and Mexico was between red states vs. blue states or something. It's projecting the present on the past a bit too much because Texas joined the Confederacy later and in recent decades has been the largest conservative state. If Talarico wins in November though then this strange polarization about Texas might break down because some of them will realize it's more internally complex. Also if it was really about slavery then why didn't they mention it when they declared independence from Mexico, and how come one of the leaders was Sam Houston who later opposed the Confederacy when the Civil War broke out. Think about it!

Just like it's possible to weaponize nuance to overly complicate an issue and prevent action from being taken it's also possible to weaponize a lack of nuance and remove understanding in order to simplify an issue present a stupid version of events that isn't true. Everybody does both these things so it's really a matter of finding who does it the least.

it's human psychology. when you have been marginalized and dominated and abused for as long as you can remember, you're basically like a confused angry child with no real sense of self, you've spend your whole life in a prison where everything you do and think and believe was dictated by your masters, so you are still institutionalized and you don't really have any outside knowledge or an ability to form your own ideas about anything. so you have to look outside for inspiration and validation, you look at the world and study the people in it who seem to really have their shit together and know what they are doing and you try to do what they do because that is all you can do at this point. but as you continue studying the world and learning more information, you eventually begin to accumulate enough raw material for critical thought and introspection to be possible, you can now stop relying so much on outside influence and can look inward and start taking an inventory and thinking about all the things you have learned and experienced and questioning everything and deciding what is right and what makes sense and what is really for you and what you are really about, and in this way you build and refine yourself and become a truly independent and autonomous individual. but if you don't do that and you just keep being the confused angry child doing the "fake it til you make it" thing and believing that if you blindly follow and emulate other people you will somehow become empowered in this way, then you still have no real agency and you're living in denial and being another kind of slave whose sense of self is being completely dictated by other people, who most likely don't really give a shit about you or your wellbeing at all. this is why some black activists thought they could empower themselves by appropriating the religious beliefs of the arabs who conquered and enslaved africa before whitey did and why some feminists thought they could empower themselves by appropriating the fashion and careerism and elitism of the male authority figures who demeaned them and harassed them at work every day, this is why kids who get picked on in school start glomming onto the bullies and emulating their behaviors and become toadies.
