Wealth of Americaโs richest 0.1 percent doubles since 2019, as profits hit record share of income
The richest 0.1 percent of American households more than doubled their wealth between the end of 2019 and June 30, 2026, according to figures published last month by the Federal Reserve.
The figures demonstrate the upward redistribution of wealth that has massively accelerated under the Trump administration, which has worked to slash social spending while eliminating regulation and slashing taxes on the financial elite. But the surge in social inequality has continued to rise for decades, under Democratic and Republican presidencies alike.
Since the end of 2024, the top 0.1 percentโs share of the nationโs household wealth has climbed from 14.0 percent to 15.0 percent, faster than under any previous administration since the Fedโs series began in 1989.
Data the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) released Wednesday show that after-tax corporate profits rose to 11.8 percent of gross domestic income (the total income generated in the US economy) in the second quarter, the highest share on record. Wages, salaries and benefits fell below half of that income for the first time since 1929, the year of the Wall Street crash.
In six-and-a-half years, the holdings of the roughly 137,000 households in the top 0.1 percent grew from $13.4 trillion to $27.9 trillion, more than 60 percent even after inflation, and the average householdโs wealth rose from $101.9 million to $203.7 million. That works out to $42,923 a day since the end of 2019. A worker earning the median full-time wage of $1,251 a week would need about eight months to make that much.
Together, the top 0.1 percent gained $14.5 trillion, almost one-fifth of the $74.7 trillion that workers received in wages and salaries since the start of 2020, according to BEA data.
The surge in inequality is so extreme that even the Wall Street Journal, the voice of American financial capital, felt compelled to comment on it. In an article published Tuesday titled โThe Gap Between the Rich and the Very, Very Rich Is Getting Wider,โ the Journal points to the growth of inequality, but primarily from a concern about the distribution of wealth among the top 10 percent. It declares: โBuoyed by a stock-market boom that has added trillions of dollars to their net worth, the extremely rich are even pulling away from other rich Americans.โ
The 400 people on this yearโs Forbes list of the richest Americans, published September 15, are worth $8.04 trillion, against $2.96 trillion for the 400 on the 2019 list. The 10 richest Americans on Bloombergโs billionaires index, led by Elon Musk with $920 billion, held $2.97 trillion on Wednesday, equal to 69 percent of the wealth the Fed estimated for the bottom half of households in June.
The bottom half of households, 67.6 million in all, owns 2.3 percent of the countryโs wealth, or $63,269 per household. Their wealth more than doubled in percentage terms but from just $28,933 per household, so the average household gained only $14.47 a day.
Average hourly earnings in the private sector rose from $28.38 in December 2019 to $37.59 in June 2026, according to the Labor Department, but consumer prices rose nearly as fast, by 28.6 percent. After inflation, the average hourly wage went up 3 percent in six and a half years, less than half a percent a year.
Of the $14.5 trillion gained by the top 0.1 percent, $9.9 trillion was in shares of corporations and mutual funds. The richest 1 percent own half of all such shares held by households outside pension accounts, and the bottom half owns 0.6 percent.
Share prices, in turn, rest on profits, which come from the unpaid labor of the working class. After-tax corporate profits have risen 76 percent since the end of 2019, while total wages and salaries, swollen by job growth, have risen 42 percent.
In the first volume of Capital, Karl Marx wrote in 1867: โAccumulation of wealth at one pole is, therefore, at the same time accumulation of misery … at the opposite pole, i.e., on the side of the class that produces its own product in the form of capital.โ
The Census Bureau reported September 15 that 13.1 percent of the population, or 44.4 million people, lived in poverty in 2025, up from 11.7 percent in 2019, by its Supplemental Poverty Measure.
In 2020, the year the Federal Reserve and Congress rescued the financial markets, the wealth of the top 0.1 percent grew 18.5 percent, nearly twice as fast as that of the rest of the richest 10 percent.
The bailout, presented as an emergency measure, in fact propped up the wealth of the financial oligarchy. As the COVID-19 pandemic spread in March 2020, the Fed cut its benchmark interest rate to near zero. On March 23 it pledged to buy securities โin the amounts needed,โ announced programs to buy corporate bonds and said it was committed to using โits full range of tools to support households, businesses, and the U.S. economy overall.โ
Over the next two years the Fedโs total assets more than doubled, to $9 trillion. Congress backed its lending with $454 billion through the CARES Act, which passed the Senate 96-0 on March 25 and the House by voice vote two days later. The cheap money drove up share prices, and stocks and mutual funds make up more than half the wealth of the top 0.1 percent.
The S&P 500 stock index has more than tripled since its low of 2,237 on the day of the Fedโs March 23 announcement.
The Trump administrationโs budget law, signed on July 4, 2025, shifts still more resources from the bottom of society to the top. In August of that year the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that resources for households in the lowest tenth of the income distribution โwill decrease by about $1,200 per year,โ mostly because of โreductions in in-kind transfers, such as Medicaid and SNAP,โ the federal food stamp program.
Resources for those in the highest tenth will rise โby about $13,600 annually,โ mainly because of tax cuts. The law cuts $914.6 billion from federal Medicaid spending over 10 years, and the CBO projects that it will leave 10 million more people uninsured in 2034.
According to the World Inequality Database, which measures wealth differently from the Fed, the top 0.1 percent held 6.8 percent of American household wealth in 1978, the lowest since records began in 1913. Their share has since nearly tripled, to 18.5 percent in 2022.
The World Inequality Report 2026, released December 10, 2025, found that fewer than 60,000 people, the richest 0.001 percent of the worldโs population, own three times as much wealth as the poorest half of humanity.
US President Donald Trump, who ranks No. 245 on the Forbes 400 with $7 billion, 10 places behind his commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, is himself a member of this oligarchy and runs the government on its behalf. A society in which 137,000 households own six-and-a-half times as much as the bottom 67.6 million is incompatible with democracy.
Forty-three percent of Americans now view socialism positively, Gallup reported on September 23, โthe first time this figure has exceeded 39%โ since it began asking in 2010. Among those aged 18 to 34, socialism outscores capitalism, 57 percent to 43 percent. The growth in support for socialism has been accompanied by an upsurge in the class struggle. In 2025, 306,800 workers were involved in 30 major work stoppages, 13 percent more workers than in 2024, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on February 20.
The working class, which produced the wealth concentrated at the top, must reclaim it through the expropriation of those great fortunes and the transformation of the giant corporations and banks into public enterprises under its democratic control, as part of the socialist reorganization of economic life in the United States and internationally.

But there arenโt many socialists, and there are even fewer truly activated socialists. So basically there's not many people I can ask for advice from and get socialist advice. This is my problem, right?
All day long I read posts from leftists, from socialists, about the lumpenproletariat, about the people who canโt be saved, sex workers, drug addicts, petty thieves, shoplifters, drug dealers, and whatever else, and a lot of it doesnโt really hit for me. What good is the knowledge that some guy a hundred years ago wrote that the lumpenproletariat have zero revolutionary potential in the scenario I'm in? This scenario being: I work a minimum wage job, night shift at a hotel. So off jump, Iโm working class and I make minimum wage. I donโt have very many options. I live in a motel that is far less nice than the place I work. Itโs all I can afford. Iโm trapped here. I live with a bunch of other people who are in similar situations. Some of them work. Some of them have other means of getting work. Some of them felonies who work minimum wage jobs, day laborers, people the system wanted to slip between the cracks. The repairman, the housekeeper, the dollar general cashier live here.
So now imagine youโre at work. My job, it's night shift. Imagine it's 3 a.m. on a Friday, and youโre outside smoking a cigarette (a Kool short), and you get to talking to a woman and a couple of her friends. You're just chatting it up, folks your age, making conversation. Next thing you know, you become friends with this woman. You come to find out sheโs got four kids. She was working at McDonaldโs, but she doesnโt make enough money there. They cut her hours. She was getting like 24 hours a week, not enough. So you ask her how she makes her money. She says she doesnโt want to tell you. She dances, is what she says. Okay. Strange. There are no strip clubs in this city, in this county even. They're illegal to open. Christian values. You get to know her. You get to talk to her a little bit more, a little bit longer. You learn what her kidsโ names are, and then she calls you one day.
Sheโs got four kids, by the way. You ainโt gonna be able to take care of four kids working a McDonaldโs wage, single mother. Look: Iโm not here to give people judgment, that's the Lordโs job, not mine. We all got to deal with the conditions of our culture and our society. We live in a barbarian civilization. Her first child was had at 15. 15 years old. Mom kicked her out when it happened. Never graduated high school. She's been on her own ever since. Itโs a different beast out here in the South.
So why's she calling you? How is she making the money? How is she able to put food on the table for her kids and have freedom for herself? She does full-service survival sex work. But sheโs not really familiar with that type of work. Sheโs not aware of the stakes, the reality, she's new to the game and doing it out of both desperation and a need for easy money. The system has not given her any sort of education about even her own bodily autonomy. Itโs all got to be figured out on her own. There are no resources. They just cut SNAP. She does full-service sex work, and she calls you because thereโs no one else in her life that is trustworthy to her. So she calls you, blows your phone up like a dozen times in a panic.
Why is she panicking? Because in the middle of doing her job, (if you can call it a job), in the middle of doing her job, she gets robbed for $600, money that she had to work to get, to buy diapers, to pay rent, to buy those little fruit barrels HUG drinks for her kids, and sheโs crying to you, begging to know what to do, wondering, can she go to the police? She canโt. It's dirty money. Theyโd arrest her just as soon as theyโd arrest the guy who took it. You know what cops do to sex workers? Involving them, even if she could, would only make her that much less safe. Whatโs her recourse? Whatโs her protection? She has none. Her only recourse is calling you, the socialist, the revolutionary, the so called communist who feeds people in the park and told her you could help her get groceries.
So I ask, to all of these so called "Marxist Leninists" who would label someone like her scum when larping politics online, when youโre on the phone with this woman, as a man, as a socialist, what do you tell her? Do you have it in the back of your mind, "Man, this lumpenproletariat! Fucking lumpen, man." Is that really what we put in the back of our heads? Because, man, thatโs the energy I get from a lot of the spaces I participate in as a socialist on the internet. I donโt got nobody I can fucking go to and call up, "Yo, I donโt know how to handle this shit, because Iโm gonna be deadass, I really donโt know how to handle this shit. Iโm not sure what resources are available for her. We need to help her get them resources." None of the spaces I'm in, save maybe this one, would offer anything of value and would probably just ride my ass for caring about this person. But fuck it man, Iโm gonna figure it out. Iโm gonna do my due diligence, because thatโs what you do as a man. Thatโs what you do as a human being. Thatโs what you do as a socialist, I can do this "Lumpenproletariat are worthless" bullshit.
Thereโs no cracking open a volume of fucking Joseph Stalin and discerning the information about what to do in situations like this from that theory. Thereโs nothing in Stalin that says you should be using your resources and your connections as a socialist to distribute Narcan in the shitty cheap motel you stay at, so fewer people are overdosing on the steps you have to walk over on your way to work. Lumpenproletariat or not, I feel a whole lot closer to the motherfucker whoโs slumped over on the steps right outside my door than I do to some of these cats that be calling themselves revolutionaries, be calling themselves socialists. But I feel like that person whoโs slumped over on the steps, and by extension me, is straight up scum of the earth that has no use, no value.
Whatโs your program then? I mean, deadass. Deadass, man. Whatโs your program? But you gotta be an optimist. You gotta get up, be with the people, even if the people are incredibly flawed. Even if the people have issues. Even if they are Lumpenproletariat. Even if Marx or Lenin or whoever you're going to quote says there's no use for them. You canโt spend all of your time writing everyone off as not being good enough, so that way you ain't have to do nothing. You know, most people I know seem to be miserable as hell. Even friends and relatives I know who graduated from Ivy League, work in finance, or lawyers at big time law firms. There's lives are really even going well either. No relationships or fucked up relationships. Some even living at home. I swear the couple people I know who seem to have a good relationship got to be like two or three out of dozens. And those are the best off of all of them, I know people that don't have any money, savings, place to go, single dad, money problems, paycheck to paycheck, depressed, drug problems, alcoholic. Like, I know it's not really a scientific study or anything, but I really find it hard to believe like everyone enjoys doing this bullshit anymore. I really find it hard to believe anyone is enjoying this bullshit even if they're meeting the full check list: get good degree, get good career, build financial security, by nice house or condo, go on vacation to beautiful beach tourism hotspot, post photos on instagram. Just from my personal interactions with all these people, I find it hard to believe. I guess the best you can really do to comfort yourself is at least you're not doing as badly as the next guy. With complicity of media and Democrats, Trump prepares major escalation of Iran war
The events of the past week leave no doubt that the Trump administration, with the complicity of the entire US political establishment, is preparing a major escalation of the Iran war. Having failed to achieve its objectives through a massive bombardment and then a blockade of the country, the White House is preparing a new and desperate gambit, potentially involving the deployment of ground troops or even the use of nuclear weapons.
The greatest danger is the chasm between the scale of what is being prepared and the publicโs awareness of it. One month before the 2026 midterm elections, Trumpโs conspiracy to escalate the war is being greeted with a wall of silence by the US mediaโwhich devoted just minutes to the war in this weekendโs Sunday talk showsโand by the Democratic Party, which has done nothing to alert the public to the renewed onslaught against Iran that the administration is preparing.
On September 22, US President Donald Trump threatened in his speech before the United Nations to โannihilate the Islamic Republic, and do it quickly.โ His threat followed a secret White House meeting, reported by the journalist Seymour Hersh on June 10, at which Trump spoke โabout a nuclear option that could perhaps bring a quicker end to the war.โ
These threats cannot be dismissed as bluster. Trump is the president of the United States and has already killed thousands of people in the months-long bombardment of Iran. The forces now converging on the Persian Gulf give him the means to carry out his threats. Nothing would be more dangerous than complacency.
After seven months of war, US imperialism has failed to achieve its aims of dominating the Strait of Hormuz, militarily defeating Iran and overthrowing its government. The administration is improvising, desperately seeking a way out of the political disaster the war has produced. But its improvisation is driven by the logic of events. American imperialism cannot accept defeat in the Persian Gulf, and each failure becomes the basis for an ever-greater escalation.
Last week, the Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press reported that the White House had sent a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East. The USS Theodore Roosevelt left San Diego on September 27, followed the next day by the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island with about 2,200 Marines. They will join the carrier USS George Washington and more than 50,000 US troops deployed across the region.
Trump โhas told aides he expects to resume bombing Iran after the November midterms,โ the Journal reported September 25. He was briefed in August on options including โsending in ground forces to seize Iranian islands near Hormuz,โ the Journal reported last month.
The deployment of amphibious assault ships along with thousands of Marines is particularly ominous. They are the means of seizing territory, and the next phase of the war may include landings on the islands near Hormuz, at the Kharg Island oil terminal or at Iranโs nuclear sites.
The administrationโs top national security officials met Friday at Camp David, the presidential retreat, โto discuss next steps in the Iran war and the Saudi-Houthi conflict in Yemen,โ Axios reported that night. The last similar meeting, Axios noted, was in June 2025, just days before Israel and then the United States attacked Iran. The new US military deployments targeting Iran parallels a renewed offensive by Saudi Arabia, supported by the United States, in Yemen.
The Pentagon confirmed Sunday that all US bombers at Britainโs Fairford air base, used for strikes on Iran, had been flown back to the United States. The withdrawal followed British Prime Minister Andy Burnhamโs claim on September 30 that Iran โplayed a partโ in an alleged plot against the base. The unproven allegation provides a ready-made pretext for escalation.
The war against Iran is part of a broader global offensive by US imperialism, centrally targeting Russia and China. Significantly, the plans to expand the Iran war accompany a sharp intensification of NATOโs war on Russia in Ukraine, which threatens at any moment to erupt into direct warfare between nuclear-armed states.
Each president since the 1979 Iranian revolution, Democratic and Republican, has worked to bring Iran back under American domination. Trumpโs war against Iran is the latest stage of a 35-year offensive to subjugate the Middle East and Central Asia: the Gulf War of 1991, the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, the destruction of Libya, the proxy war in Syria and Israelโs genocide in Gaza.
Amid overwhelming popular opposition to the war and the ensuing surge in the cost of living, particularly of energy, the Democratic Party is expected to make significant gains on November 3. It is determined, however, to ensure that any electoral repudiation of Trump does not lead to a let-up in the drive by US imperialism in the Middle East.
The Democratsโ policy is to โwin this war,โ as Senator Ruben Gallego of Arizona said on CNN on September 30. Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, the senior Democrat on Pentagon appropriations, said on CNN Thursday that Trump needed to โcome up with a plan that can work and that doesnโt leave Iran permanently in control of the Strait of Hormuz.โ Democratic Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, a former Navy pilot, faulted Trump on ABCโs โThis Weekโ on September 27, saying, โWe canโt leave the Strait in the hands of the Iranians.โ
None of the partyโs congressional leaders has called for halting the new deployment. Rather, 58 House Democrats, among them former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, voted with Republicans on September 16 for a bill expanding Trumpโs tariff powers against Russia and extending the sanctions on Iran. The party is running 67 congressional candidates โwith a national security background, more than double the number who ran in any of the last four elections,โ the World Socialist Web Site reported in a series that began last week. After the elections, the Democrats intend to work with Trump to escalate war throughout the world.
Opposition to the war is overwhelming, but the media, the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are working to prevent its translation into action. The DSA plays a critical role in demobilizing antiwar sentiment. Jacobin, the magazine aligned with it, has not reported Trumpโs plans to attack Iran after the election, and neither Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont nor Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, a DSA member, has issued a statement on them.
The escalation of war abroad is accompanied by an assault on the working class at home. The price surge triggered by the war has led to a disastrous reduction in workersโ living standards. Diesel has risen from $3.76 a gallon the day before the war began to $6.34 on Sunday, according to AAA.
Trump said April 1 that, with the country โfighting wars,โ it was โnot possible for us to take care of day care, Medicaid, Medicareโall these individual things.โ The White House has asked Congress for a $1.5 trillion military budget for fiscal 2027, a 42 percent increase, while cutting nondefense spending by 10 percent. The war budget and the attack on social programs are a single class policy.
The struggle against war and its disastrous economic consequences cannot be subordinated to the Democratic Party, which is fully committed to the predatory aims of US imperialism. Ending the war against Iran and halting the global eruption of American imperialism requires the independent mobilization of the working class on the basis of a socialist program, seeking to unite the struggle against war with the defense of jobs and living standards.

<Lassalleanism (also Lassallism) was a state socialist political tendency developed by the German jurist and socialist activist Ferdinand Lassalle. Lassalleanism viewed the state as a neutral, eternal institution above class society, which could be captured by workers through universal suffrage to bring about socialism. Its central practical demand was for state aid to be provided for the establishment of producer cooperatives. Proponents of this strategy advocated an alliance between the workers' movement and the Prussian state against the liberal bourgeoisie.
<The ideology was most prominent in the General German Workers' Association (ADAV), which Lassalle founded in 1863. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, who were Lassalle's contemporaries, were vociferous critics of Lassalleanism, which they described as "Royal Prussian government socialism" and a form of "social Bonapartism". They argued that it was an opportunist tendency that abandoned independent class action in favour of a single dogmatic "panacea" and tied the nascent workers' movement to the existing aristocratic-bureaucratic state. The conflict culminated in Marx's 1875 Critique of the Gotha Programme, which opposed the fusion of the Marxist Social Democratic Workers' Party with the Lassallean ADAV on the basis of a program heavily influenced by Lassallean ideas.

The idea of "blue haired social justice warriors" was a later invention that kind of coagulated toward the end of Obama 2. It was a misreading by liberals that they had way more power than they actually did. What helped things was that they just saw the entire cultural hegemony of right wingers collapse spectacularly with Bush and it seemed to just break the brains of conservatives. Like the Republican Party's autopsy after Romney lost in 2012 was just "we're too old, white, and racist and we have to change that". There's almost no greater assurance of your own hegemony than your opposition literally saying "well we have to be more like them and less like us."
The backlash against the excesses of liberal "social justice warriors" and the stunning victory of Trump did the same for Republicans what Obama's second term did for liberals, it convinced them "Oh the majority are on our side, they want more of what we're selling."
But the reality is neither side is actually "winning" the culture war, I'd argue most Americans are pretty socially libertarian. As soon as one side convinces itself it's "won" or is "winning" then they scare people away with ghoulish displays of their worst excesses. Like the Republican party is all Chuds and anti-social narcissists now, they can't even put the mask back on. So when some ICE douchebags murder a white woman in Minnesota the loudest voices on their side just keep screeching "BASED! BAAAAAAAAAAASED!"
