Marxism doesn't deny that ideology is tremendously influential. A lot of people have a vulgar concept of historical materialism that basically holds that people only ever act in accordance with their material interests, but if this were really true then class society and class oppression would be impossible. The ideas of the ruling class are the ruling ideas precisely because people can be duped into acting against their own interests. Marx doesn't argue that ideology doesn't have power, he simply argues that its shape and purpose is dictated by the economic imperatives of the mode of production, and that even if ideology is often effective, it is not universally so. That's actually not uncommon, and it's not uncommon for it to bite the ruling class in the ass when reality proves their own propaganda false. For example, in Haiti a lot of slavers dismissed the possibility of a large scale uprising because they didn't think Black people had the capacity to plan and organize such a thing, or the fortitude to carry it out. Morality is hardly integral to human life. Cannibalism was once widespread and the Romans considered both rape and slavery perfectly acceptable in the right context. Point being that what is and is not considered moral behavior has varied wildly throughout history, which reveals it as a construct. As a construct, there was surely a time without it.

The argument for communism requires nothing more than the self-interest of the majority. Most people will live a more comfortable life in a communist society. Some will not, but they do not matter.
