He was never in favor of the Vietnam War, but he was the 1960's equivalent of a pedantic anti-campist as was the rest of the SPUSA and thus opposed the anti-war movement equally because it seemed too sympathetic to the Soviet Union. Yeah it was dumb shit but again it was a belief held by the rest of the SPUSA to distance themselves from the "Bolshevism" of the CPUSA. By the time he became chairman in 1970 he regretted his previous views and realized that it was just making the SPUSA turn rightward, the last straw being when they refused to provide any support for George McGovern due to being explicitly opposed to the Vietnam War. This led for Herrington to leave and form what would become the DSA

There's plenty to criticize the man over, being too sympathetic to liberalism and immensely stupid opinions about Israel being among them, but dude was no more anti-communist than Norman Thomas
