Like historically you've got the folks that think its useless, hell I believe Teddy Roosevelt was selected as a VP originally because they wanted to put the progressive candidate as far from power as possible, but then he got the lottery win of McKinley dying at literally the start of his term and he became President immediately. Then it became some "grooming a successor to the current administration" thing like an apprenticeship, but now with Kamala and Vance it seems to be a means of having an official presidential whipping boy to offload all the unpopular decision making onto with the presumption these people would inherit the presidency while they sabotage their own future campaign.
