i've been trying to do research for an essay looking for actual legitimate sources like digitized texts from written literature and academic papers and scientific journals and pre-internet news articles and things like that, and it's just straight up impossible to use the internet for this now, absolutely everything that might be even remotely-credible as a source is locked behind paywalls by a zillion different private companies. i would have to sign up for a subscription and fill in my credit card details and lock myself into an annual contract to each and every source that i want to read or cite, that's just insane and not even an affluent individual who could afford the cost would be willing to endure all that hassle just to write one fucking essay.

it's no wonder that misinformation and fringe bullshit is so prevalent now, why people get all their facts from social media influencers and other charlatans instead of doing their own research - because they can't do their own research even if they wanted to, our society has defunded things like public education and public libraries to the point where they are practically worthless and sealed off the entire internet to everyone who isn't part of the academic or financial elite, only people who work in prestigious universities or corporate-funded think tanks are exempt from the paywalls and allowed free access to these kinds of sources through financial partnerships between the organizations.

the internet is dead, and not in the way that stupid fringe conspiracy weirdos say it is dead, where everything has been replaced by robots or some such nonsense, but dead as a public resource, closed to most of the public. in the early era of the internet it was built up into a public commons by naive optimistic people who trusted that the forces of free market capitalism would carry on their legacy after they were gone, and then those people got old and retired or died and the next generation who took their place were just soulless greedy vultures who looted the commons of everything they could get their hands on and locked it up in vaults so nobody else could touch it. it's all fucking gone, it's just a shopping mall now.

what are we supposed to do about this? cut our losses and abandon the internet and return to the old ways of conducting research, go our local public libraries? the last time i went to a public library was sort of like looking at the book aisle in a goodwill store or the libraries they have for inmates in a typical county jail, nothing but evangelical christian books and self-help books and conservative political pundit books and old trashy fiction books that were on supermarket shelves over a decade ago, all the junk that couldn't be sold for more than a dollar. i can't even imagine what would happen if you talked to the librarian to ask for recommendations about some academic subject you are studying, they'd probably just stare at you like a dog being shown a card trick.

there's nothing left now, it's just an intellectual wasteland. investing so heavily in the internet fucked us over, we hedged our bets on this seemingly-public resource and defunded and abandoned the seemingly-obsolete pre-digital alternatives because we were so confident and optimistic about how much better and faster and more democratic and open the internet would be, and now it's too late to go back and we're completely fucked. and AI is just the next phase of this, abandoning the idea of independent research entirely to place all of our trust in google, microsoft, anthropic, and facebook and their AI models as not only the sole sources of all of our information, but the sole sources of human thought in general, deferring all of our reasoning and perception to them and letting our own brains atrophy so that we aren't even really human beings anymore, we are just automatons guided entirely by the will of a few trillionaires.
