If one wants to read an unwholesome partisan message into the KPRF’s push for intervention against Nazi saluters, a far less embarrassing one is suggesting they’ve a vested interest in bringing two regions full of Soviet Nostalgists into the Russian electorate.
Probably loads of reasons for the Russian state’s reluctance to intervene despite support for that within both Donbass and Russia, one of them no doubt is because Russia was already in the process of modernising their military and Euromaidan (perhaps intentionally) coincided with Russia having spent its budget on R&D for Armata, Kurganets, Ratnik, Su-57, Koalitsiya, AK-12, etc basically all of which got delayed or essentially shelved in favour of doing the standard thing of just modernising what Russia already has in stock, given the civil war could have boiled over at any time prior to 2022.
The Russian military wasn’t particularly prepared by 2022, so in 2014 when everything is due to be replaced by more modern, high-tech, lower production rate (aka more Western) machines and scrapped, I can’t imagine it would have been any more successful than 2022.

Now that financial and military security situation for Russia has been completely flipped and they’re now having to rethink if the downtime for retooling all their factories to serially produce these prototypes and retraining their existing forces to use them is a wise idea given such a suddenly hostile environment.

If you really can’t see the difference, then you have to consider that Ukraine simply chooses not to evacuate the civilians they’re installing military equipment on top of, while evacuating everyone out of Donbass is entirely Ukraine’s goal so they can exert sovereignty over it.

The Ukrainians are infinitely more based than the rest of Europe because at least they believe in their own country enough to violently resist the nuclear power trying to control them for 12 years. Meanwhile, Trump yells at a European country and (except for Spain) they capitulate while cope-posting about how sucking Trump's cock is a good thing. They don't even believe in defending themselves.
